GRUNDGESETZ – FEDERAL CONSTITUTIONAL COURT KARLSRUHE

We work with the symbolic power of the place called the church of German democracy.

The performance GRUNDGESETZ had its premiere in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in 2018. On 25 May 2019 the performance was performed on the balconies of the Federal Constitutional Court – Bundesverfassungsgericht in Karlsruhe.

The open, transparent architecture of the Bundesverfassungsgericht itself has become a subject for the CHORUS’ intervention. We will put the ruling power of democratic architecture to a stress test. We will check how it speaks to the CHORUS – a multi-lingual, collective community which does not let itself be framed in unambiguous legal categories and therefore becomes a challenge to the transparent symbolic power construction of the building. The Bundesverfassungsgericht will be subjected to the critical power of fifty voices and the power of the text of the law spoken by a community of people who demonstrate the language of the Basic Law in its power, in its fragility, in its tension and silence.”
